A jury has convicted a 25-year-old man of capital murder in the killing of former Texas Tech basketball star Andre Emmett. The Dallas County jury deliberated about four hours before finding Larry Daquan Jenkins guilty on Friday of the September 2019 slaying. Jenkins was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, since prosecutors weren’t seeking the death penalty. Prosecutors say Jenkins and two other men followed Emmett, who was 35, from a nightclub to his Dallas home in order to rob him. A witness told police that Jenkins was the one who fatally shot Emmett. The other two men alleged to have taken part in the robbery are awaiting trial on capital murder charges.
The Republican leaders of the Arizona Legislature won't try to defend a new law limiting up-close filming of police that has been blocked by a federal judge. The decision essentially ends the fight over the contentious proposal, although the Republican sponsor says he may push a revised measure next year. The judge gave the Republican leaders until Friday to decide if they wanted their lawyers to intervene after the state attorney general refused to defend the law. The judge agreed with the ACLU and press groups that it violates the First Amendment and temporarily blocked it last week. The groups will now seek a permanent injunction.
The third fight between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Álvarez took four years to happen. Yet their showdown on Saturday night in Las Vegas always seemed both inevitable and necessary. That’s because the first two meetings between these talented boxers didn’t truly resolve anything about one of the best rivalries in this era. The ride-hailing service Uber says all its services are operational following what security professionals are calling a major data breach. It says there is no evidence the hacker got access to sensitive user data such as trip history. A hacker, who appears to have been working alone, announced the breach on Thursday after apparently tricking an Uber employee into providing credentials. Screenshots the hacker shared with security researchers indicate they obtained full access to the cloud-based systems where Uber stores sensitive customer and financial data. It is not known how much data the hacker took.

CHICAGO — Two Chicago police officers have been hit with felony charges of aggravated battery and official misconduct in connection with a shooting in the Pilsen neighborhood this summer that injured two people, including a bystander.

Police say a staffer for Republican U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski was trying to pass a flat-bed truck on a northern Indiana highway last when the SUV they were in crashed into an oncoming car, killing Walorski and three other people. The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office said Friday a witness saw the SUV speed up and cross the centerline of the two-lane highway into the path of the other car. Data showed the SUV driven by Zachery Potts, who was Walorski’s district director, was going 77 mph at the time of the crash. Also killed were Walorski's communications director Emma Thomson and Edith Schmucker, 56, of Nappanee, Indiana, who was driving the other vehicle.
New Jersey’s casinos, horse tracks that offer sports betting and the online partners of both types of gambling outlets won $470.6 million from gamblers in August, up more than 10% from a year earlier. The amount of money won from in-person gamblers at casinos was nearly $274 million, up 4.4% from a year earlier. But that total still lagged behind the level of August 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic hit. Returning to pre-pandemic levels for in-person gamblers has been the main goal of Atlantic City’s nine casinos, regardless of the fact that money from internet and sports betting continues to grow.
Alex Jones' criticism of his trial in Connecticut over calling the Sandy Hook school shooting a hoax has become a topic of the proceedings. During the fourth day of the trial Friday, a lawyer for the Sandy Hook families questioned a corporate representative for Jones' Infowars about how seriously the company was taking the trial. The attorney showed a photo he said was of an Infowars webpage depicting the judge with lasers shooting out of her eyes. Jones has called the trial a “kangaroo court." The Infowars representative said she was taking the trial very seriously. Jones is expected to begin attending the trial next week. A jury will decide how much in damages he will have to pay the families for saying the shooting never happened.

A Michigan man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for his role in the U.S. Capitol attack by a mob that disrupted Congress from certifying President Joe Biden’s 2020 electoral victory. A Justice Department news release says Chief Judge Beryl A. Howell also sentenced Anthony Robert Williams, 47, of Southgate, Michigan, to three years of supervised release after his prison term and ordered him to pay $2,000 in restitution and a $5,000 fine. In June, a jury in Washington, D.C., convicted Williams of obstructing the Jan. 6, 2021, joint session of Congress for certifying the Electoral College vote. Only five other Capitol riot defendants have been sentenced to a longer prison term than Williams.

Massachusetts taxpayers can look forward to seeing a return of some of their tax dollars this year. The announcement by Gov. Charlie Baker came after the state auditor’s office certified that tax revenues exceeded allowable revenues under a little-noticed 1986 law that kicked in due to the state’s soaring tax collections. Two Chicago police officers face felony charges for allegedly shooting and seriously wounding an unarmed man during a July shootout on the city’s southwest side that also wounded a second man. Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx said Friday that Sgt. Christopher Liakopoulos and Officer Ruben Reynoso have been charged with one count each of aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm and official misconduct. Foxx says the officers were relieved of their police powers Thursday before they turned themselves in to authorities. Both are slated to appear at a bond hearing later Friday. Foxx says both officers “are being charged with having fired their shots” that wounded an unarmed man on July 22. He has recovered.
